I’m 26, and I live in St Charles with my boyfriend and our dog. I am a Software Engineer, and I love to play board games and read in my spare time. I joined CrossFit in December of 2018. Prior to that, I was focusing primarily on running and powerlifting. I ran my first half marathon last year and have competed in two local powerlifting meets so far.
What made you start CrossFit and what has kept you doing it? Has your motivation changed since you first started?
I started CrossFit because I felt like I was stagnating working out on my own. I wanted coaching and to learn how I could improve. I scheduled an appointment with Kim purely out of curiosity about CrossFit, and I enjoyed it so much that I never looked back! I love working out, and CrossFit has helped me feel like a much more well-rounded athlete.
What have you learned since joining the CrossFit St. Charles Family?
I’ve learned so much about pushing myself out of my comfort zone, both physically and mentally. I learned that I don’t always have to stop when I’m tired, and it’ll really pay off to push past the mental barriers.
What’s your favorite CrossFit moment?
My favorite moment is PRing my squat clean during Open workout 19.2. The Clean was still a pretty new movement to me at the time, and I was a bit intimidated to see that the weight climbs to 95 lbs on the third set of squat cleans. I kept it out of my head, wondering if I’d even get past the 8-minute time cap for the first two rounds. I ended up making it to that third round, and when I got to the squat cleans, I failed 95 lbs on the first try. Coach Sarah Floyd came over and started giving me cues on my form and encouraging me, and I was able to complete three reps with that weight before time ran out! I was so excited, I hugged Sarah and a bunch of my classmates. It felt like a really big mental & physical win.
What impact has CrossFit had on you outside of the gym?
CrossFit has taught me so much about what I’m truly capable of and to not let my fears get in the way of improving myself. This has translated to my work and the goals I set for my personal development.
What’s your next CrossFit goal(s) and how close are you to reaching it?
I want to be able to consistently string together three or more kipping pull-ups. Right now, I can sometimes get one! Haha
What’s something we might not know about you yet?
I lived in Illinois for the first 23 years of my life.
What advice might you give to someone who is considering joining CrossFit St. Charles or is new to the gym?
Embrace the community! There are so many amazing and friendly people at this gym. Everyone is incredibly encouraging and constantly inspiring.
What’s the Cathy motto?
I usually say some variant of “You got this!” both to my classmates and to myself.
Write us a WOD! What kinda movements do you love? What’s your favorite way to put in work? The combination probably doesn’t make sense but here are my favorites!
I LOVE lifting, so it would probably be strength based. Maybe something like 5 rounds for time of 12 deadlifts, 6 squat cleans, and 4 push jerks.
