The CrossFit St Charles Athlete of the Month for January is Leigh Van Dren!
Tell us a little bit about yourself
I am married with a 21 year old daughter. I work as a remote psychiatrist for the VA hospital in North Carolina. I have been living in Missouri for less than a year.
What made you start CrossFit and what has kept you doing it?
I was looking for something challenging and I keep coming because I can see strength gains and I love the supportive atmosphere.
Has your motivation changed since you first started?
I started CrossFit at a gym out of state and I initially wanted to get to a point where I could RX everything. Two years in, I realize that’s not going to happen. Now, I just want to keep getting fitter and stronger.
What have you learned since joining the CrossFit St. Charles family?
I have learned improved technique on lifts.
What is your favorite movement?
Back squat
What impact has CF had on you outside of the gym?
I feel more confident in other areas of my life besides just fitness. I know I can do hard things.
What is your next CrossFit goal and how close are you to reaching it?
TTB and I am not close.
What’s something we might not know about you?
I have always lived in the south and this Missouri winter is WAY more winter than I am used to.
What advice might you give to someone who is considering joining CFStC or is new to the gym?
Be consistent, listen to your coaches, and don’t compare your workouts to other people’s. Just scale the workout to the hardest level that you can do and over time, you will find that you can keep making it harder.
What is the Leigh Motto?
Be yourself; no one can say you’re doing it wrong.
If you could write your own WOD, what would it look like?
It would have thrusters and burpee box overs because I find these movements really hard and I would feel really happy when it’s over!
