Meet the Coaches 2021: Gabby Falco

We’re back with the coaches and today we are here to introduce you to Coach Gabby! She may be the newest coach but has been part of our community for some time now. Not only that but she’s super enthusiastic around our members and has been pursuing fitness for a majority of her life! Make sure to read our interview with her down below!

1. What is your experience/ background in fitness and exercise?

I’ve been pretty active my whole life ever since I could walk. I was always active in sports. In high school, I played softball and basketball. In college, I played intramural sports and continued weight lifting, and stayed as active as possible. I found Crossfit in 2017 when my sister brought me to her gym to try it out. I continued it for about 5 months before moving here and found my home here at CrossFit St. Charles in February of 2018.

2. How and when did you discover CrossFit?

I discovered CrossFit in the spring of 2017 when my sister first introduced me to it. I went to classes 2-3x a week for about 5 months with her in Columbia. That year we went to the CrossFit Games and I immediately fell more in love with the sport. Once I became a part of this amazing community, I knew I was hooked!

3. What are you most passionate about when it comes to CrossFit?

When it comes to CrossFit, I think the big thing that sparks joy in me is the constant growth you gain. Starting something new is scary and uncomfortable, but the growth you gain from it is the best feeling. With CrossFit, you are constantly getting stronger, and faster, and developing new skills. You are always growing. I’m a firm believer that you can learn something new every day. And the best thing is, is that you get to watch fellow members grow alongside you. There is no better feeling than watching someone PR something they’ve been working hard for! And let’s be real, no matter how HARD a WOD might be, I always end up loving it because I am so proud of what my body is capable of doing. CrossFit truly has changed the game for me.

4. Why did you become a CF coach?

I wanted to become a CF coach because I have a huge passion for this sport and I want others to find that passion that I share. CrossFit has helped shape me into the healthiest version of myself, and it really is something that I love sharing! And I want members to feel super welcomed in this community and I knew being a coach, I’d be able to do that!

5. What’s a big lesson you’ve learned from being a coach?

Being that I’ve only been a coach here for a month, I have learned how important it is to be coachable. Even us coaches need to be coachable, we are always learning new things. I have learned how important it is to have an open mind and always be willing to learn. You never know what amazing things you can learn from our coaches! Also, I have learned how important it is to ask for help, never be scared to ask a question if you are confused! The last thing we want is for our athletes to feel uncomfortable or unsure how to do something!

6. What do you think is the most important part of being a coach?

I think the most important part of being a coach is paying attention to every athlete and their skill level and making them feel as comfortable as possible. Not every person is going to be an elite member walking into the gym. It is important for us as coaches to take the time to break things down, and really make sure our athletes feel comfortable with the movements they are performing. Every member reacts differently to different cues, so it’s important to take the time to get to know the capabilities of our athletes. And it is super important to remember that we ALL start somewhere, and it is super important for our members to know that. And we all have setbacks, but we always come back stronger! (throwback to me breaking my wrist)

7. What’s your favorite part about being a coach?

There’s been plenty of things I love about being a coach! I love watching our members excel during WOD’s! I love those “Ah ha!” moments when I correct a movement or help with a cue, and our members catch on! It really is an amazing feeling knowing that I’m helping someone get stronger daily!

8. What do you hope to do for others as a coach?

As a coach, I want to help brighten our members’ days! Being at the gym is one of my favorite times of the day, and I want our members to feel the same way. I plan on helping each member excel in their own ways because we all come to the gym for different reasons! I want our members to feel accomplished and proud of the work they put in during each class! As if SugarWOD doesn’t tell us enough, we are awesome! All smiles when it comes to my classes, and I’m always here with open arms!
