Super happy to celebrate our early AM Member, Lillian as our Athlete of the Month! Not only is she a scientist by day, but she is also a shining example that CrossFit really is for everyone no matter when or where you start! Read all about her below in our interview!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a medical research scientist, hopefully soon to retire! I have been married to the same wonderful guy for 37 years, am the mother of two awesome kids, and have two beautiful, energetic grandkids! I love to travel with my husband in our RV, camping, fishing, hanging out in the pool, and gardening.
2. What made you start CrossFit and what has kept you doing it?
I started doing Crossfit in 2014 because injuries and health issues started to curb my ability to run my then normal 40 miles/week schedule (lol). I was bored doing machines and weight training at a regular gym and it just looked interesting. I was instantly hooked! Crossfit feeds my competitive soul and makes me forget that I am twice the age of most people in the gym!
3. Has your motivation changed since you first started?
I still have the original motivation but it has adapted to include just being “fit for life” and being able to handle all the unexpected things life will throw at you.
4. What have you learned since joining the CrossFit St. Charles family?
I have come to understand the meaning of “Crossfit community” even more. My original gym family was so dear to my heart, and I was a little apprehensive to move on to a new place. CFSTC just reinforced that Crossfit really is a global community, everyone has been so inclusive and I have made so many new friends.
5. What is your favorite movement?
Burpees! Deadlifts & GHDs!
6. What impact has CF had on you outside of the gym?
For some reason…I now approach many tasks as an AMRAP or RFT (I have 10 min, what can I get done in 10 min…)
7. What is your next CrossFit goal and how closer are you to reaching it?
The Crossfit games!! haha! (Go big or go home!), actually the ever-elusive muscle-up or handstand walk, (maybe before I’m 70)
8. What’s something we might not know about you?
Well, I am also a breast cancer survivor of 6 years. I don’t say this for concern, but to show that we never know what life will give us, be prepared and control the things you can control.
9. What advice might you give to someone who is concerning joining CFSTC or is new to the gym?
The coaches always say “you do you”, listen to them, learn from them, and don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. Have fun and focus on your own fitness. The hardest part is just showing up, keep moving, and your future self will thank you.
10. What is the Lillian motto?
These days there’s a theme: “I don’t know but I’ve been told, you never slow down, you never grow old…Oh my, my, Oh hell yes,” or “It’s never too late, and you’re never too old”
11. If you could write your own WOD, what would it look like?
Buy in 50 GHD
Deadlift/BF Burpee ladder (ascending weights, descending reps)
Cash-out 50 GHD
12. What are two of your favorite songs?
Not necessarily workout music, but I’m a child of the 70s. My favorite band is Fleetwood Mac, so probably Dreams, The Chain, or any song by Stevie Nicks. (maybe some of you have heard of them)
Congratulations Lillian! We’re proud of you and can’t wait to see what else you’ll do!
