Let’s give a big round of applause to our September Athlete of the Month! Sam Maue! Aside from moving well and staying consistent, Sam joined only 3 months ago and always comes in with a great attitude and puts in the work! Get to know more about Sam by reading our interview with him below!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Sam and I live in St. Charles, MO. I grew up in the area and went to Zion Lutheran Harvester just down the street from CFSTC and Lutheran High St. Peters. I spent 6 years out of state for school in both Murray, Kentucky and Auburn, Alabama. I moved back to St. Charles about 2 years ago to start my first real job at Boeing in St. Louis as a Software Engineer. I just adopted a cat as well named Barney!
2. What made you start CrossFit and what has kept you doing it?
I’ve generally always been active. I did cross country and track in high school and did some running throughout college. Before the start of 2021, I was with Orange Theory for a little over 1.5 years. Around June is when I was looking for more structure again with my fitness routine which is how I found CFSTC.
3. Has your motivation changed since you first started?
My motivation I would say has increased. It had a rude awakening during my first 1-on-1 with Kim realizing how out of shape I got during the first 5 months of the year. Something I didn’t expect was seeing all the compliments from coaches about how great my mobility is, which has motivated me to keep consistent with my yoga outside of CrossFit.
4. What have you learned since joining the CrossFit St. Charles family?
Most of the exercises at Orange Theory were simple and easy to nail down the form. Here, I quickly learned how complex movements were and how long it may take (years even) to nail down a movement. I’ve quickly learned not to stress out about it too much and as long as I’m putting in the work, I’ll be fine.
5. What is your favorite movement?
My favorite movement (so far) is the Hang Squat Clean.
6. What impact has CF had on you outside of the gym?
To be honest, I have not seen much change yet outside of the gym. I’ve been here for only 3 months, so I’m hoping to see some more progress here soon!
7. What is your next CrossFit goal and how closer are you to reaching it?
I think I am a lot closer than I expected to be able to do a successful toes-to-bar. With my progress inside the gym and mobility, I think I can get there soon! Other than that, I just have goals to look and feel better and happier!
8. What’s something we might not know about you?
I am very passionate about women in sports. Specifically, I am a huge women’s basketball fan, collegiately, and the WNBA. Go Indiana Fever!
9. What advice might you give to someone who is concerning joining CFSTC or is new to the gym?
It didn’t take me very long to realize that CrossFit is for everyone! I was expecting most people to be 10x fitter than I am like you see on TV. Don’t be afraid to start!
10. What is the Jana motto?
“Never settle for mediocrity” – Dr. Crystal Rae Coel
11. If you could write your own WOD, what would it look like?
Since I like running and recently found out I am good at Wall Walks, I would do X amount of Hang Squat Cleans, X amount of Wall Walks, followed by an 800m run for several rounds.
12. What are two of your favorite songs?
My two favorite songs are “Cornelia Street – Live From Paris” and “Christmas Tree Farm” by Taylor Swift.
Congratulations to Sam once again! We’re super proud of you and can’t wait to see how else you’ll improve!
