Athlete of the Month

Laura Minks is our CFStC Athlete of the Month for August!

Laura Minks!

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am the mother of 2 girls, ages 14 and 12.  I work in radiation oncology as a dosimetrist.  I have been doing CrossFit for almost 10 years now!  I have tried other avenues of fitness but always find myself back in a CrossFit gym.

What made you start CrossFit and what has kept you doing it?

I started CrossFit with a friend who convinced me to buy a Groupon (I’m showing my age) and take a trial class at CF2.  I continue to stick with CrossFit for a similar reason-the community!  I love the support and friendships I build at the gym.  Everyone encourages others to be the best versions of themselves and I love that about CrossFit.

Has your motivation changed since you first started?

My motivation has changed a little but more to adapt to my age than anything else.  I used to be a little more focused on being able to do competitions and lifting heavy, now I like to focus on moving well and staying consistent when life gets hectic.

What is your favorite movement?

The snatch

What impact has CrossFit had on you outside of the gym?

CFStC helps me outside the gym by helping with stress management and overall mood improvement. Coming to the gym, talking with friends and working out is always a mood booster long after I leave.

What is your next CrossFit goal and how close are you to reaching it?

My next CrossFit goal is to get my pull up back!  I’m really not that close, lol!

What’s something we might not know about you?

I’m from a very rural community in Illinois and grew up riding horses.

What advice might you give to someone who is considering joining CFStC or is new to the gym?

My advice to new members would be that they shouldn’t shy away from the classes with movements that they don’t feel confident doing.  The only way to improve is to keep practicing them.

What is the “Laura” motto?

Cardi-ohhh look, weights!

If you could write your own WOD, what would it look like?

If I could write my own workout it would definitely be a partner would (because they are always more fun).  It would include a barbell and no running or gymnastics, lol!
