Athlete of the Month

Zach Hogbin

Tell Us A Little Bit About Yourself!

I’m 32 and I currently run a Waterway carwash. I started working out at a buddy’s house when I was probably 15. I love food, doing anything outside, Cardinals baseball, and watching movies.

What made you start CrossFit and what has kept you doing it?

I remember watching a documentary about the crossfit games on Netflix. The first event they did was Murph (I had never heard ofMurph at the time). The athletes were freaking out because of how hard that workout is. At the end, people were being carried off the field from exhaustion, suffering heat strokes, and collapsing at the end. I was like, “ok this is something I could get into.” The athletes were pushing themselves to their limits and beyond, and that looked really cool. What kept me going is the mental component to working out. I think being pushed beyond your comfort zone and doing things that are hard for no other reason than that it’s hard, is a great way to strengthen the mind. The coaches and members at CFStC are all rock stars; so it makes coming to the gym SO much more enjoyable! Its all about the people man.

Has your motivation changed since you first started?

Nope. I try to view each workout as a chance to get better in some way.

What have you learned since joining the CFStC family?

Everybody’s got their own strengths and opportunities. Its perfectly fine to not be great at something(s). All the people here have something unique to offer and it all helps in its own way! Also, I need to do more conditioning…

What is your favorite movement?

Barbell back skwaat!

What impact has CF had on you outside of the gym?

I do feel mentally stronger and like I can take on challenges or adversity better.

What is your next CF goal and how close are you to reaching it?

I would really like to do a Murph RX (pretty close to that) and do double unders and ring muscle ups (light years away but thats ok). I like working on my snatch and that is getting a little better each session.

What is something we might not know about you?

I really love food!

What advice might you give someone who is considering joining CFStC or is new to the gym?

CrossFit is one of many ways to get in better shape. It may not be for you and that’s ok! At least give it a shot; there is no failure. You either succeed or you learn something. You’ll either find out you enjoy it or don’t. New to the gym? Everyone was a beginner at one point. Comparison is the thief of joy. It’s better to be consistently good, than occasionally great.

What is the Zach motto?

“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

If you could write your own WOD, what would it look like?

It would probably be a long EMOM with assault bike, burpees, thrusters, and lunges.
